Round 1 - "Champions Challenge"

19 August 2004

Event Report

Green, Pearson and Legerstee!

The Champions Challenge round of the WA Virtual Rally Series held on Thursday 19 August at the WA Car Club rooms saw an enthusiastic group take to the controls!

Mark Cameron had shown the best pace in the practice session and did a terrific job arranging the 'sporting' aspects of the evening to ensure fair and consistent competition. A minor technical glitch [OK I forgot the remote control for the 4th TV :-( ] restricted play to 3 stages all taken from Colin Mcrae 4 on the PlayStation.

Caroline van der Mey ran the results centre and had a constant stream of information from the stages and provided instant results for the 'on edge' competitors eager to see how they had fared. The battle raged at the head of the field with Adam Pearson, Garth McGuire and Daniel V all setting top 2 times. Matt Green sat in third consistently, I'm sure this time he'll get some practice between events.

Nikki Legerstee spotted an opportunity to take the lead in the Ladies series and joined the competition later in the evening.

Steve Shaw, Greg Flood and Paul van der Mey all struggled. Yeh, just plain struggled. At one point it appeared as though Steve had the hang of it yet the level of concentration failed to dampen the smiles. Lucky there are no repair bills...

Three Champions took to the machines and it appears the young and reckless Matt Green had an advantage running earlier on the road and the wily old competitors did not have an answer.

OOPS! Paul had to retire the Xsara with 'Intercomm problems'... The competition was more than just the results and one competitor even had to 'retire' from one stage when the Xsara got stuck 'off the road' smoke coming from the exhaust, tree to the left, tree to the front, nose down the bank pointing at the road, first, neutral & reverse available but no go at all, not even the regular resets would work. In a desperate bid to get going again other drivers were asked to assist despite the no-service ruling ... no luck :-( No-one had seen this before! Restart the game machine and away we go from the stage start, good to have flexible rules like that hey...

"I've a sneaking suspicion a number of competitors have been practising between events. This is a very serious accusation and strictly permitted by the regulations." said event director Paul van der Mey. "Thanks to Mark Cameron loaning me a PlayStation I'll be able to do some of that as well, and Caroline is likely to enter the next round once she has a few more stages under the belt." he added.

An enjoyable night was had by all competitors and spectators and it could not happen without the help of a number people including Matt Green, Mark Cameron, Shane Kinnear and Caroline van der Mey and the friendly relaxed attitude of the competitors.

Here's looking forward to the next round the "Service crew V's Driver/Co-driver V's Officials Challenge" on 21 October 2004 at the WA Car Club rooms. Looking at offering special entry deals for the Officials at this round, stay tuned!

See you there...
