Round 2 - "Competitors v Service Crew v Officials"

21 October 2004

Event Report

Richard Burns makes the difference in the WA Virtual Rally Series

The most competitive field yet took to the game machines at the latest round of the WA Virtual Rally Series. Yet it was the Richard Burns Rally toting Matt Green that had the edge. There is a vast difference between Colin Mcrae 4 and the just released Richard Burns Rally. With two stages on the PlayStations, and one on the XBox, Matt Green used his extra time well by practising on the XBox running Richard Burns Rally.

In the all important Officials V Service Crews V Competitors, the Competitors had the fastest time (Phew!) with the Officials edging out the Service Crews. Because the numbers of competitors across in each group is different the best average time and the lowest maximum time for a group went to the Competitors as well. So it was a clean sweep for the Competitors.

Nikki Legerstee leads the ladies series standings after two rounds from Caroline van der Mey and they both now have one win a piece. Both took stage wins in the competition on the night. Nikki is aiming to replicate Sebastian Loeb's efforts in the WRC and will no doubt get some practice before the next event to help achieve that goal. "I'm surprised how much fun this is, it would be great for more ladies to give it a go." said Caroline.

A new round winner this round in Matt Green and second place to a first time series entrant in Duncan Leighton have added some spice to the series. Garth Mcguire drove well to take third followed by the series leader going into the round, Adam Pearson.

Stage 1 was the PlayStation Ellendale stage and Duncan Leighton [who owns Richard Burns Rally on PlayStation2 -Ed]  and Adam Pearson set the pace about a second apart. SS2 was a practice stage in Richard Burns Rally that saw Matt Green blitz the field by over a minute! This comfortably set up the round win for Matt and it looks like Richard Burns Rally sales may increase so the others can get some practice! Duncan Leighton led SS3, this time from Garth Mcguire and Paul Wright. In the end the order was Matt Green the clear winner from Duncan Leighton and series regular Garth Mcguire third ahead of Adam Pearson.

The men's series is now led by Matt Green just 2 points ahead of Adam Pearson with another 2 points back to Garth McGuire. With four rounds to go the series is wide open and even Duncan Leighton, Daniel V, Mark Cameron and Paul Wright are in with a chance despite competing in only one round each to date.

Adding the Richard Burns Rally stage on XBox really changed the character of the competition. [If it's allowed, RBR will be back -Ed] Matt clearly held the advantage but the others were very closely grouped with Duncan Leighton and Garth Mcguire split by a hair's breadth and Adam Pearson and Kim Marchant (Yes Kim it's true!) also extremely close together. Kim Marchant showed improvement despite not practising between events. Ross Tapper also entered the fray, we're going to have to build a rally simulator...

Best of all the competitors and spectators had great fun on the night. Many thanks must go to the equipment suppliers on the night, the more the merrier. Come and join us at the next round the "Two Wheel Drive Challenge" on 20 January 2005, this event will be contested using two wheel drive cars only! The dates have been chosen to miss the 'busy' rally and social times of the year... and the long break gives you plenty of time to practice.

See you at the next round
